GolfMagic visits Machrihanish, a remote, world-class links course that remains surprisingly affordable.
Machrihanish began as The Kintyre Golf Club in 1876. Three years later, Old Tom Morris extended it from a 12-hole layout to 18 holes after adding new land. The 1st hole is famously regarded as one of the great opening holes, setting the tone for the course.
The most challenging part of visiting Machrihanish is the journey itself. The course is about 20 miles from the Mull of Kintyre, an area where Sir Paul McCartney filmed a video on a nearby beach. The scenic three-hour drive along the A83 leads you to a course ranked among the top 40 in Great Britain and Ireland, and top 20 in Scotland.
Visitors can also enjoy rounds at nearby Machrihanish Dunes and Dunaverty, enriching the overall golfing experience.
"The land here was 'specifically designed by the almighty for playing golf,'" said Old Tom Morris.
Tom Doak noted it is "the only course in Scotland that still seems just as raw and natural as the first time I was there 35 years ago."
JH Taylor made adjustments in 1914, and Sir Guy Campbell completed the final changes in the 1940s. Despite these interventions, the course appears untouched by modern design, blending seamlessly with the natural terrain.
In recent decades, more golfers have discovered Machrihanish, appreciating its unique charm and authenticity.
Machrihanish Golf Club offers a rare, authentic links experience combining rich history, stunning location, and a natural course layout treasured by golfers worldwide.
