Early in his career, Ethan Hawke’s pursuit of diverse roles sometimes clashed with expectations in Hollywood. Yet this fall, his commitment to creative variety has led to major roles in The Lowdown, Blue Moon, and Black Phone 2.
Over decades of work, Hawke has built a reputation for constantly surprising audiences. He’s moved fluidly between drama, dark comedy, and psychological horror, inhabiting each character with passion and nuance.
This year, his projects show an unusual range. In Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon, Hawke portrays real-life songwriter Lorenz Hart, a man marked by contradiction. On FX’s The Lowdown, created by longtime friend Sterlin Harjo, he becomes Lee Raybon, a reckless reporter chasing truth at any cost. Meanwhile, in Black Phone 2, Hawke returns as a haunting figure who terrorizes children from beyond the grave.
“All these disparate parts of my life are being released at the same time. I’ve been so worried about this whole aging process. But the great thing about it is that the roles get a lot more complicated,” Hawke said over Zoom from New York City.
“I feel astonished to have been doing this job for 30 years and have two of the best parts I’ve ever had this year,” he added.
Hawke also revealed that his portrayal of Lorenz Hart has been a long-held ambition, one he has nurtured for over a decade.
Through a mix of drama, comedy, and horror, Ethan Hawke continues redefining his craft, proving that longevity in acting thrives on courage and transformation.
