What’s happening for Remembrance Day in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Remembrance Day in Niagara-on-the-Lake

As Remembrance Day approaches, Canada prepares to honour the soldiers who have fought and continue to fight to protect the country and its people—from the First World War and the Second World War to present times.

Poppy Campaign and Community Involvement

Businesses throughout Niagara-on-the-Lake are offering poppies, which locals wear proudly on jackets and shirts. Public poppy displays can be seen at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, the Historic Court House, the RiverBrink Art Museum, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124 on King Street.

The museum’s poppy drive began in October, with staff placing 75 poppy wreaths around the heritage district.

Legion's Role in Commemorations

Al Howse, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124, shared that members have been actively preparing for the commemorations.

“Everything,” he said with a laugh, referring to the preparations.

The legion’s poppy drive started on October 11, involving members collecting donations and distributing poppies on the streets.

“We accept donations at that time for our poppy trust fund to support veterans and their families,” Howse explained.

He added that poppies are available in about 200 businesses, with thousands already distributed across the community.
