Several people became ill at Joint Base Andrews, a US military installation near Washington, following the arrival and opening of a suspicious package containing an unknown white powder. The incident led to an evacuation of the building where the package was opened.
The package, reportedly containing an unidentified white substance, was opened inside a building that also accommodates the Air National Guard Readiness Center. After the package was opened, multiple individuals fell ill and received treatment at the base’s Malcolm Grove Medical Center.
“As a precaution, the building and connecting building (at the base) were evacuated, and a cordon was established around the area,” said Joint Base Andrews in a statement.
First responders were dispatched promptly and found no immediate threats at the scene. The area was subsequently handed over to the Office of Special Investigations, which is currently conducting an inquiry into the event.
