Marsy’s Law for Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, and the Wisconsin Newspaper Association are jointly organizing a webinar that will highlight ethical standards and practical approaches to responsible media coverage involving crime victims.
The online session will explore professional journalistic practices for engaging with victims, ensuring sensitivity in reporting, and preventing harm while telling survivors’ stories. The discussion will also connect these concepts to Wisconsin’s constitutional amendment on crime victims’ rights, known as Marsy’s Law, which guarantees rights such as privacy, notification, and participation in the judicial process.
The session will be moderated by Nela Kalpic, State Director for Marsy’s Law Wisconsin.
The webinar will emphasize insights from the
National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) Guide for Reporters, outlining guidelines on how to protect and respectfully engage survivors, manage attention from the media, and use personal stories constructively for both the reporter and the victim.
Presenters will discuss how journalists can balance the public’s right to know with the survivor’s right to dignity, creating stories that inform without exploiting those affected by crime.
