Mother! Destroyed Her: How Jennifer Lawrence Approached Die My Love

The Oscar-winning actor spoke with Q’s Tom Power about her thoughtful return to the screen as a young mother coping with mental health struggles.

After reading Ariana Harwicz’s novel Die, My Love during his book club, Martin Scorsese sent a copy to Jennifer Lawrence, saying he could see her perfectly in the main role. Inspired, Lawrence took on the lead part in the film adaptation directed by Lynne Ramsay, co-starring Robert Pattinson.

The movie tells the story of a mother grappling with her identity and emotions after the birth of her first child. For Lawrence, newly a mother herself, the project became a deeply personal way to reconnect with acting after stepping back from Hollywood.

Lawrence told Tom Power how she prepared emotionally for such an intense role, how she avoids letting her early fame define her, and why she once stepped away from the spotlight when she began to feel more like a celebrity than an artist.

The full interview with Jennifer Lawrence was produced by Catherine Stockhausen and is available on the Q with Tom Power podcast.
