Gangland figure Tony Mokbel has been re-sentenced on appeal for a 2012 drug conviction, resulting in his immediate release. Originally given 30 years with a non-parole period of 22 years, he had pleaded guilty to leading an extensive drug syndicate across three separate cases.
During the re-sentencing, the court reduced one of his primary sentences from 20 years to 13 years, seven months, and 15 days — a duration already served before the appeal hearing. Mokbel showed respect to the bench, bowing to the justices before exiting the court, where he greeted his girlfriend and left without comment.
“He is taken to have served that entire sentence,” Justice Stephen McLeish stated.
Justice McLeish, together with Justices Maree Kennedy and Stephen Kaye, considered several factors in the decision, including the quashing of Mokbel’s 2023 conviction known as Plutonium, his head injury sustained in custody, and his status as a first-time drug offender.
Earlier, on October 3, the Court of Appeal ruled to overturn one of Mokbel’s three major drug convictions (Quills), ordered a retrial for a second (Orbital), and upheld a third (Magnum).
Following an appeal, Tony Mokbel’s sentence was reduced to time served, leading to his release after over a decade in prison for major drug offenses.
