US Reconnaissance Aircraft Patrols Over the Black Sea

On Monday, a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance aircraft carried out a patrol over the Black Sea, as indicated by flight-tracking data from Flightradar24. The Boeing RC-135U Combat Sent departed from the Royal Air Force base in Mildenhall, United Kingdom, and followed a route over the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.

The plane entered Black Sea airspace near the Crimean Peninsula before turning back toward its home base. The Boeing RC-135U Combat Sent is an advanced electronic reconnaissance aircraft used by the United States for gathering and analysing radar emissions and various electronic signals from foreign military systems.

These missions play a crucial role in supporting the intelligence operations of the U.S. and NATO, providing insights into enemy radar and electronic countermeasure capabilities.

Increased Surveillance Since 2022

Following the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, U.S. and NATO reconnaissance activity over the Black Sea has intensified. Aircraft such as the RC-135, RQ-4 Global Hawk, and P-8A Poseidon regularly monitor Russian military movements around Crimea and across the region.

While these flights occur strictly in international airspace, Moscow often condemns them as provocative actions.

Despite these criticisms, such reconnaissance operations have become a constant part of Western intelligence efforts along NATO’s eastern border.

Author’s Summary

U.S. and NATO reconnaissance flights continue over the Black Sea, aiming to monitor Russian military activity while balancing tensions with Moscow.
