The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has launched an online suitability map to support geothermal energy development in the region. This map highlights the potential of various geothermal energy applications, providing a strategic basis for investments and project planning.
The map fosters targeted use of geothermal energy throughout the canton. Geothermal energy, particularly from shallow heat extraction via ground source heat pumps, already plays a key role in promoting a sustainable, secure energy supply and advancing decarbonization efforts aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Recognizing Aargau's favorable geothermal conditions, the Cantonal Government responded to a motion by the Grand Council in March 2022, which called for the creation of a geothermal register to assess potential in local municipalities.
Following this, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment collaborated with experts to conduct a detailed study of the canton's geothermal resources.
The Canton of Aargau "has favorable conditions for geothermal energy," and the initiative is aimed at "promoting the targeted use of geothermal energy in the canton."

Aargau's new geothermal suitability map offers a crucial planning tool, underlining the canton’s commitment to sustainable energy and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
