First and Last Bakery, based in Connecticut, has issued a recall of three tomato pasta sauces after state regulators detected a potential botulism hazard linked to improper processing methods.
The sauces “were manufactured without an approved scheduled process or otherwise evaluated to determine if the process is adequate.”
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that First and Last Bakery has suspended sales and production to ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements.
Improperly processed acidified or low-acid canned foods may lead to the formation of Clostridium botulinum toxin. Botulism is rare but can affect the nervous system and is fatal in 5–10% of cases.
“Officials have not received any reports of illness to date.”
Shoppers are advised to check their jars and return any affected products to avoid potential botulism risks linked to improperly processed sauces.
