Deni Avdija recorded 26 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists as the Portland Trail Blazers overturned a 22-point deficit to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder 121-119 on Wednesday night.
Jrue Holiday contributed 22 points, including two decisive free throws that gave the Blazers a 121-118 lead with six seconds remaining. Off the bench, Jerami Grant added 20 points, helping Portland (5-3) secure the win and deal the defending NBA champions (8-1) their first loss of the season.
“With the Thunder trailing by three, Isaiah Joe was fouled on a jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining. After review showed his toe was on the 3-point line, he made the first free throw but missed the second intentionally.”
Oklahoma City failed to convert a final tip-in attempt as the clock expired. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 35 points, while Aaron Wiggins scored 27. The team rested several key players, including Chet Holmgren, Lu Dort, and Alex Caruso, after Tuesday’s win over the Los Angeles Clippers.
Holiday’s jumper gave Portland its first lead at 97-96 with 6:44 remaining. Following a forced backcourt violation, he drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 100-96. Wiggins responded with a personal 5-0 run to reclaim the lead for Oklahoma City, but Grant’s late jumper restored the Blazers’ advantage at 105-104.
Portland completed a stunning 22-point comeback with decisive plays from Holiday and Avdija to hand the Thunder their first defeat of the NBA season.
