Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy faced strong criticism from opposition MPs after appearing without a poppy during Prime Minister’s Questions. He was standing in for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who attended the COP30 climate conference in Brazil.
The incident occurred less than a week before Remembrance Day, prompting immediate backlash when Lammy began speaking at the despatch box.
“Any reason David Lammy is not wearing a poppy?” tweeted Tory MP Kevin Hollinrake. “A disgrace that the Deputy Prime Minister of this nation, standing in for the Prime Minister, is not wearing a poppy.”
Fellow Conservative MP Saqib Bhatti called the omission “disrespectful.”
“At PMQs today there is only one person not wearing a poppy — David Lammy. He does not care for our fallen soldiers or those who gave their lives for us. What a disgrace he is,” read a post from a large right-wing X account with over 200,000 followers.
However, about 20 minutes into the session, attentive viewers noticed Lammy later appeared with a poppy pinned to his lapel.
David Lammy faced fierce backlash for not initially wearing a poppy at PMQs, though he was later seen with one, sparking debate just before Remembrance Day.
