Voters in poll side with Newsom, Democrats on Prop. 50 — a potential blow to Trump and GOP

Voters Support Newsom and Democrats on Proposition 50

Roughly 60% of likely voters in California support Proposition 50, a redistricting initiative backed by Democrats that could reshape the state’s congressional map and strengthen their position in the U.S. House of Representatives. The measure also poses a potential setback to President Trump and the GOP.

The latest poll by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, co-sponsored by The Times, shows that 38% of respondents oppose the proposal. Governor Gavin Newsom and his allies argue that the redistricting plan would create fairer representation and enhance Democrats’ influence in Congress.

Despite its technical nature, the topic has drawn significant voter engagement. About 71% of likely voters said they had heard substantial information about the measure, an unusually high level of awareness for a subject often viewed as procedural.

“That’s extraordinary,” said Mark DiCamillo, director of the IGS poll. “Even though it’s kind of an esoteric topic that doesn’t affect their daily lives, it’s something voters are paying attention to.”

Experts suggest that unprecedented spending may explain this interest. Reports filed last week showed that nearly $158 million has flowed into both sides of the campaign in less than three months.
