President Files Charges After Groping Claim

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged on Wednesday that sexual harassment be recognized as a criminal offense across the country after she was allegedly groped and kissed by a man during a public walk.

According to local reports and social media footage, the incident occurred on Tuesday near the presidential palace while Sheinbaum was greeting citizens. A man, appearing to be intoxicated, approached her from behind, placed an arm around her shoulders, touched her hip and chest, and tried to kiss her neck before being restrained by security.

Authorities later confirmed the man’s arrest following the complaint filed by Sheinbaum. The president explained that she decided to report the assault after learning the suspect had harassed other women.

“My view is, if I don’t file a complaint, what will happen to other Mexican women? If they do this to the president, what will happen to all women in our country?”

During her morning press briefing, Sheinbaum also announced that the government would review whether such behavior is prosecutable across all states, stating that it must become a recognized crime nationwide. She recalled facing similar harassment when she was younger.

“We are going to launch a campaign so that this becomes a criminal offense in every state,”
