Sacramento — Golden State arrived in Sacramento on Tuesday night without its top three stars. Stephen Curry did not travel with the team, and by game time on Wednesday, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler were also ruled out of action.
With the lineup depleted, coach Steve Kerr turned to younger players. He started rookie guard Will Richard, second-year center Quentin Post, and shooting guard Moses Moody, alongside Brandin Podziemski and Jonathan Kuminga.
None of the starters had more than four years of NBA experience, marking the least seasoned starting lineup for Golden State since April 26, 2012, before Kerr became head coach. That 2012 lineup included Klay Thompson, Chris Wright, Jeremy Tyler, Mickell Gladness, and Charles Jenkins.
“Obviously it’s more difficult when you’re missing your stars, but it’s a great opportunity for a lot of guys,” Kerr said before the game. He added that he wanted to see “energy, pace, throwing the ball ahead, playing aggressively on offense. Defensively, containing penetration and avoiding the easy stuff, just trying to put a good 48 minutes together. I’m excited.”
The challenge was eased somewhat, as Sacramento’s roster was also hampered by injuries.
Golden State faced Sacramento shorthanded, relying on young players to step up as Coach Kerr sought energy and consistency despite missing the team’s main stars.
