Everything to Know About the November Supermoon

The November supermoon, also known as the Beaver Moon, will be the closest full moon of 2025. It will appear brighter and slightly larger than usual in the night sky.

On Wednesday evening, look up to see the moon shining more brightly, hanging larger, and seeming closer than normal. This happens because the full moon will coincide with its closest point to Earth in orbit — a phenomenon called a supermoon.

What Is a Supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when a full moon aligns with perigee, the point in the moon's elliptical orbit nearest to Earth. The opposite point, when the moon is farthest away, is called apogee. Because the moon’s orbit is oval-shaped, its distance changes throughout the month.

When a full moon takes place at perigee, the moon can look up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter compared to the smallest full moon of the year, according to NASA.

"The term 'supermoon' was first coined in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nolle."
