Rick Stein, renowned chef, presenter, and restaurateur, has shared the reasons behind the unexpected closure of his only Wiltshire restaurant. Opened in Marlborough in 2016, it was his sixth restaurant in England and served signature dishes like Dover sole à la meunière and turbot hollandaise.
The restaurant closed abruptly on October 5. In an exclusive interview with the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald, Stein spoke about his new book and upcoming TV appearance while revealing the motivations for shutting the venue.
"We decided to close because there just wasn’t enough business," Stein explained. "We’re not going under, but we are having to restructure our business just because of the hard time we’re going through. The whole hospitality industry is suffering. Personally, I think it’s a mixture of the government’s last budget and the quite grim economic time we have been going through."
Closing the Marlborough restaurant was never Stein’s intention, but economic difficulties and a shrinking customer base made it unavoidable.
Author's summary: Rick Stein closed his Wiltshire restaurant due to economic challenges and a decline in customers, reflecting broader struggles in the hospitality sector.
