Houston exercises Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard team options

The Houston Rockets have confirmed positive contract developments ahead of the team option deadline for rookie deals. According to Danielle Lerner of The Houston Chronicle, Houston has exercised the team options for third-year guard Amen Thompson and second-year guard Reed Sheppard.

Both players are vital to the Rockets’ current rotation, and this move ensures they remain with the team through the 2026–2027 NBA season, unless traded. During that season, Sheppard, the third overall pick in 2024, will earn $11.1 million, while Thompson, the fourth overall pick in 2023, will receive $12.3 million in his option year.

Although the team picked up Thompson’s option, he is expected to pursue a long-term extension next summer. A similar move was made last October when Houston exercised Jabari Smith Jr.’s team option before signing him to an extension later that offseason.

With point guard Fred VanVleet sidelined, Thompson and Sheppard have taken on larger responsibilities. Thompson is averaging 33.5 minutes, 14.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.5 turnovers per game while starting every matchup. Sheppard contributes 10 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 turnovers in 22.5 minutes nightly.

The Rockets currently rank 19th in the NBA for defensive rating at 116, while boasting the league’s highest offensive rating at 125.2 after their first four games.
