The 2025 election brought a series of unexpected outcomes and many tight contests across Southold Town. In a major upset, Town Board member Greg Doroski defeated Republican incumbent Catherine Stark to win the 1st District Legislature race.
Doroski’s seat on the board may be filled by fellow Democrat Alexa Suess, who at midnight maintained an 81-vote lead over Republican Chris Talbot in a race still too close to finalize.
Incumbent Brian Mealy secured another term, while Kate Stevens claimed the Fishers Island seat. With these results, Jill Doherty appears set to remain the only Republican member on the board.
Trustees Liz Gillooly and Eric Sepenoski comfortably won re-election, joined by Democrat Joe Finora as part of the waterway oversight team. Democrat Dan Goodwin retained his position as highway superintendent after defeating Greg Schlachter. Republican Denis Noncarrow will continue serving as Town Clerk.
In the assessors’ contest, Ken Poliwoda won a seat, but the fate of incumbent Charles Sanders remains uncertain — he trailed Democrat Leah Tillman Sullivan by 30 votes when tallies paused at midnight.
“Huge,” said Suffolk County 1st District Legislator-elect Greg Doroski, calling his win significant in what he described as a “Republican-favored district.”
The Suffolk Times will update final results as races are confirmed, with complete coverage appearing online Wednesday and in Thursday’s print edition.
Greg Doroski’s surprise legislative victory highlights dramatic Democratic gains in the 2025 Southold elections, reshaping the town’s political balance.
