The 2025 Long Island elections faced setbacks due to technical issues and system miscommunication across counties. Despite preparations, officials encountered unexpected delays in tallying votes.
The Nassau County Board of Elections tested a new method of uploading memory sticks from polling sites to speed up results. However, the plan failed to deliver on election night.
“It just didn’t work out the way it was supposed to,” said Democratic Commissioner James Scheuerman.
According to Scheuerman, pre-election testing did not simulate the large-scale influx of data. While the software processed incoming files, officials were unable to update the website. After midnight, they had to rely on paper receipts from certain voting machines because several memory sticks were missing.
The new Suffolk County Board of Elections website created uncertainty for users interpreting results. Officials explained that complete reporting did not necessarily mean full vote counts were online.
“Election night complete” indicates that votes from Election Day were counted, while “partially reported” shows an incomplete tally.
Visitors were urged to click the “view results by election district” link for accurate updates. The Suffolk board declined to release turnout numbers when asked by Newsday.
Both counties’ election systems struggled with new technology, delaying results and confusing the public about the accuracy and completeness of posted tallies.
