Germany Arrests Syrian Suspect in Alleged Jihadist Plot

German authorities announced on Sunday the arrest of a 22-year-old Syrian man in Berlin suspected of planning a jihadist attack. Details of the alleged plot have not been disclosed.

The suspect was detained on Saturday in the southern Neukölln district of Berlin and is currently held in a detention center. He is scheduled to appear before an investigating judge later on Sunday.

Investigation and Evidence

A spokesman for the Berlin prosecutor’s office informed AFP that the suspect is accused of preparing a serious act that could endanger the country. Special police units conducted searches at three residential addresses linked to the man, recovering items that could be used to manufacture explosives.

The Bild newspaper reported that the suspected attack was planned to take place in Berlin, but further specifics are yet to be released.

Government Response

"The terrorist threat in Germany, though often abstract, remains heightened," Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated. He added that the Syrian had been in Germany since 2023 and that his suspicious activities indicating attack preparations were detected in time.

Recent months have seen Germany endure multiple knife attacks as well as incidents fueled by jihadist and far-right motives, increasing the focus on national security measures.
